    Follow-up sequence

A follow-up sequence is a set of messages sent after a first contact to a person who has not replied, each adding something new instead of repeating the original.

Most replies do not come from the first message. A follow-up sequence gives the recipient more chances to respond by sending a small number of additional messages over a set period.

Each follow-up should add value: a short question, a relevant observation, a useful resource, or a clearer ask. A message that only says "just checking in" gives the reader no reason to respond.

The sequence should stop automatically when the person replies, accepts a meeting, or opts out. Tracking reply rate by step shows which follow-ups work and which can be cut. Follow-ups apply on LinkedIn and email alike, and the overall structure is a sales cadence.

    Common questions

How many follow-ups should you send?

A small number, spaced out, is a sensible starting point. Test and watch reply and opt-out behavior rather than relying on a rule.

Should follow-ups stop after a reply?

Yes. Once someone replies, the sequence should stop and a person or the reply workflow should take over.
