    Cold outreach

Cold outreach is contacting someone who does not know you and has not asked to hear from you, usually by email or LinkedIn. Its goal is to start a relevant conversation, not to close a sale in the first message.

Cold outreach means reaching out to a prospect with no prior relationship or request from them. Typical channels are email, LinkedIn messages, and connection requests. The message has to earn attention quickly, because the recipient owes you nothing.

Good cold outreach is relevant, brief, and honest about why you are writing. It starts with a reason that fits the person's role or situation and asks for something small, such as whether the topic is worth a conversation. Sending the same generic pitch to a huge list tends to hurt response and, on LinkedIn, can put the account at risk.

Cold outreach is usually paired with follow-ups, since many people do not respond to a single message. Rules about unsolicited messages differ by country and channel, so check the requirements that apply to you.

    Common questions

Is cold outreach the same as spam?

No. Cold outreach that is relevant, targeted, and easy to decline is different from bulk, generic messaging. Relevance and respect for the recipient are what separate the two.

How is cold outreach different from warm outreach?

Cold outreach goes to people with no prior connection to you. Warm outreach goes to people who already know you or have shown some interest, such as a mutual contact or an engagement with your content.
