Buyer persona
A buyer persona is a semi-fictional description of the typical person who researches or decides on your product, including their role, goals, and concerns. It guides what you say and how you say it.
A buyer persona focuses on an individual in a role, such as a head of sales or a founder. It describes what they are responsible for, what they are measured on, what frustrates them, and what a good outcome looks like for them.
In outreach, personas drive message content. A message to a founder cares about growth and time, while one to an operations lead may care about process and reliability. Using the right frame makes a short message feel relevant instead of generic.
Personas should come from real conversations and data, not guesses. Because one account often involves several people, teams define a few personas per ICP, such as the user, the decision maker, and the person who influences the purchase.
Common questions
How many buyer personas do you need?
Start with the one to three people most involved in a purchase. Add more only when you see clearly different needs.
Should personas be based on assumptions?
Avoid that. Base them on interviews, replies, and closed deals so the details reflect real buyers.
